13-Year-Old Ohio Boy Succumbs to Injuries Days After ATV Crash That Sparked Fire

A 13-year-old boy has died from injuries sustained in a weekend ATV crash in northern Ohio that also left a 10-year-old driver hospitalized and closed a state highway for nearly two hours.

Lamonie Campbell, of Cleveland, was a passenger on a four-wheeler driven by a 10-year-old when the vehicle was struck by a Toyota RAV4 around 1:45 p.m. on June 20 in Milan Township, according to local reports citing the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The collision caused the ATV to catch fire, while the SUV went off the roadway, overturned and struck a utility pole, authorities said. Campbell was rushed to a hospital but died four days later, on June 25, according to WOIO, WKYC and The Advertiser-Tribune.

State Route 113 was shut down for nearly two hours as crews worked the scene. The driver of the SUV, a man from Berlin Heights, was evaluated by first responders but appeared uninjured. The 10-year-old ATV driver, whose name has not been released, was also hospitalized; his condition remains unclear.

Campbell's family announced his death through a GoFundMe fundraiser that initially sought to cover medical bills and has since shifted to funeral expenses. As of Saturday, the campaign had raised more than $9,000 toward an $11,000 goal.

Tabatha Laskowski, a friend and coworker of Campbell's mother, wrote in the fundraiser that Lamonie was 'still connected to machines' but had 'been legally declared deceased' shortly after the accident. She described him as 'a fiercely loving big brother and son' and 'a terrific young man, always polite and kind to others.'

Laskowski added that Campbell's mother, a single parent, is still grieving the recent loss of the boys' father, leaving her to support two other sons while coping with this tragedy. 'Her entire world was turned upside down,' Laskowski wrote.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol has not released further details on the crash, including whether charges are pending. The incident adds to a growing concern over underage ATV drivers on public roads, an issue advocates say needs more attention in rural communities where off-road vehicles are common.

The Campbell family has asked for privacy as they arrange services. A memorial fund has been set up through the GoFundMe page.
