Orla Wates, a 19-year-old from London, died in a motorcycle accident on the famed Hà Giang Loop on April 2. Her family's subsequent decision to honor her wishes as an organ donor has saved the lives of three critically ill patients in Hanoi.
Wates was on a gap year adventure through Southeast Asia before her planned studies at Durham University in the UK. According to Vietnam News, the accident occurred on the winding mountain pass, a route renowned for its breathtaking views but also its significant safety challenges. Traffic accident fatalities remain a serious concern in Vietnam, with over 10,000 lives lost in 2024 alone, per BBC reports.
In their profound grief, Orla's parents, Henrietta and Andy Wates, authorized the donation of her organs at Việt Đức University Hospital. Hospital representatives confirmed that her gifts were successfully transplanted to three Vietnamese nationals facing organ failure.
"We believe that if there were a way to give opportunity to others, this is what Orla would have wanted," Henrietta Wates told the BBC. "Knowing that she is living on through them brings us great comfort." Andy Wates added, "Vietnam was a country she loved and so to give back to Vietnam as well, I think, is very important for us."
A hospital spokesperson described the act as one that "transcended nationality and race" and has "moved many," offering new hope in a country with a high demand for organ transplants.
