Admiral praises USS Lincoln crew amid reports of worsening conditions on record-long deployment

WASHINGTON, Aug 16 (Reuters) – The head of U.S. Central Command offered a forceful defense of the crew of the USS Abraham Lincoln on Sunday, calling his visit to the carrier “awe-inspiring” and praising the sailors’ resilience after family members and lawmakers raised alarms about deteriorating conditions on the ship.

Adm. Brad Cooper, in a post on social media, acknowledged the strain of a deployment that has stretched beyond 200 days without a port call — a modern-day record for a U.S. carrier, according to Democratic lawmakers. But he pushed back on the broader narrative, saying the Lincoln has the lowest number of mental health cases among the Navy’s 11 active aircraft carriers and crediting the ship’s leadership for making mental health a priority.

The Lincoln departed San Diego in November and was later rerouted to the Middle East to support U.S. military operations in the war with Iran, with roughly 5,000 sailors and Marines on board. In the weeks since families began speaking publicly about morale and mental health concerns, the deployment has become a flashpoint in Washington.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said earlier this week that news reports “completely misrepresented” life aboard the carrier. President Donald Trump went further Friday, dismissing concerns about the length of the deployment and saying it was “not nearly long enough.”

The exchange underscores the political sensitivity surrounding extended carrier operations as the Pentagon tries to project force in the Middle East while managing the wear on its most visible assets. For the Lincoln’s crew, the end date remains unclear, and the debate over how long is too long shows no signs of easing.
