Alphabet Replaces Verizon in Dow Jones Industrial Average; GOOGL Edges Higher After Hours

Shares of Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL) notched modest gains in Tuesday’s after-hours session after S&P Dow Jones Indices announced that the Google parent will replace Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ) in the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA), effective before the open on June 29. Verizon’s stock slipped slightly in extended trading after finishing the regular session higher.

As of late Tuesday, GOOGL was up about 1.1% in after-hours action, while VZ edged 0.45% lower. The index reshuffle underscores a broader shift toward tech-heavy weighting in the 30-stock benchmark, which has long been dominated by industrial and financial names.

Alphabet’s inclusion broadens the DJIA’s representation of the digital economy, spanning search advertising, cloud infrastructure, artificial intelligence, autonomous mobility, healthcare tech, and media distribution. According to S&P Dow Jones Indices, Alphabet’s larger market cap and higher share price make it a more fitting constituent for the communication services sector within the price-weighted index.

Honeywell International Inc. (HON) will remain in the Dow under the new name Honeywell Technologies after completing the spin-off of its aerospace business. The spun-off entity, Honeywell Aerospace (HONA), will not join the index.

Because the DJIA is price-weighted, Verizon’s low share price meant it accounted for only about 0.5% of the index—making its departure largely symbolic but strategically significant for the index’s sector balance.

On Stocktwits, retail sentiment for GOOGL held at ‘bullish’ over the past 24 hours, with message volume remaining high. Over the last 30 days, related message activity surged more than 950%, while the stock’s retail watcher base rose 0.7% in the same period.

Retail traders reacted positively to the announcement. One user welcomed Alphabet’s entry into the blue-chip index, while another bullish trader speculated that the stock could test the $400 level following the news. GOOGL is up more than 11% year to date.
