Analysts Bullish on Monolithic Power Systems, Citing Automotive and AI Demand Surge

By Daniel Brooks | Global Trade and Policy Correspondent

Investment firm Oppenheimer has significantly raised its price target for Monolithic Power Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: MPWR), signaling strong confidence in the chipmaker's growth trajectory fueled by two of today's hottest technology sectors.

In a recent note, Oppenheimer boosted its target to $1,300 from $1,200, maintaining an Outperform rating. Analysts pointed to "exceptional demand" from automotive and artificial intelligence applications as primary catalysts. The firm also anticipates positive momentum from the company's upcoming fourth-quarter earnings report and first-quarter outlook.

This move follows a similar upgrade from Wells Fargo, which on January 26 increased its price target to $1,200 from $1,125, reiterating an Overweight rating. Wells Fargo analysts noted an improved sentiment in the semiconductor sector following the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), with demand patterns providing "increased visibility" for the near term.

Monolithic Power Systems specializes in high-performance, energy-efficient power solutions. Its integrated "monolithic" technology—which packs complex circuitry into a single chip—is critical for reducing power consumption and boosting performance in data centers powering AI workloads, next-generation electric vehicles, and advanced consumer electronics.

The dual analyst upgrades reflect a broader optimism about companies positioned at the intersection of automotive electrification and the AI infrastructure build-out. As these markets expand, demand for efficient power management chips is expected to surge.

Market Voices

David Chen, Portfolio Manager at TechGrowth Capital: "MPWR is a textbook example of a 'picks and shovels' play. You don't need to bet on which AI model wins; you bet on the essential hardware that makes all of them run. Their design wins in automotive are equally compelling."

Rebecca Shaw, Senior Analyst at ClearView Research: "While the AI narrative is powerful, investors should scrutinize the sustainability of order volumes. The automotive cycle can be lumpy, and there's rising competition in power management. The Q1 guidance will be crucial."

Marcus Thorne, Independent Market Commentator: "Here we go again—another chip stock riding the AI hype wave to a sky-high price target. Analysts are chasing momentum. When the music stops on AI spending, these valuations will look ridiculous. It's pure speculation dressed up as analysis."

Arjun Mehta, Electrical Engineer & Industry Blogger: "The technical edge of MPWR's monolithic design is real. In applications where board space and thermal management are constraints, their solutions are often the only viable option. This isn't just hype; it's physics."
