Australian Couple's Dream Home Built on Wrong Land, Forced to Physically Relocate House

In a bizarre and costly administrative mix-up, a couple from regional Victoria has been forced to literally move their entire house after discovering it was built on the wrong plot of land.

Melanie and David Moor had envisioned a peaceful tree-change when they purchased a five-acre block in Corangamite Shire, a two-hour drive west of Melbourne. In March 2024, they assembled their prefabricated home on the site, completing plumbing and electrical work, eager to start their new life.

Their plans were upended five months later by a call from the local council. "We were told to stop all works because the house was on the wrong block — and we actually owned the one next door," Melanie Moor told AFP. "It's just been a nightmare."

The Moors claim unclear boundary markings and reliance on advice from both the council and their real estate agent led to the error. The Corangamite Shire Council declined to comment on the case, and the involved real estate agent could not be reached.

On April 2, in a dramatic operation, the couple watched as their home was lifted and transported roughly 100 metres by truck to its correct location. The financial and emotional toll has been significant. They are currently living in a caravan while the house is re-secured and essential services like power, water, and septic are reconnected — all at their own expense.

Compounding the stress, both face health challenges; Melanie has an autoimmune disease and David lives with a liver condition. "The idea was that I could actually relax a little bit and work from home," David said, reflecting on their original dream.

Under an agreement with the owners of the land where the house was mistakenly built, the Moors have until May 2 to restore that plot to its original state. Despite the ordeal, they express relief. "It was a relief seeing the truck take the house across the property," Melanie said.

/// USER COMMENTARY ///

"This is a shocking failure of due diligence at multiple levels. Conveyancers, surveyors, the council — someone along the line clearly dropped the ball. While terribly unfortunate for the couple, it's a stark reminder for all property buyers to verify everything themselves."Michael Chen, Property Lawyer, Melbourne.

"My heart absolutely breaks for them. Dealing with serious health issues and then this? The system completely failed this couple. The stress alone is unimaginable, not to mention the crippling cost they shouldn't have to bear."Sarah P., Community Advocate (posted on social media).

"Unbelievable. This is pure incompetence. The council 'declines to comment' and the agent is unreachable? Typical. The little guys pay the price while the responsible parties vanish. This couple should sue everyone involved.""FedUpLocal", online commenter.

"As a builder, I've seen similar boundary disputes, but never a fully built house on the wrong lot. The relocation itself is a major engineering feat. The positive takeaway is that modern prefab homes are remarkably portable if you have a deep enough wallet."Gary Wilson, Licensed Builder, Geelong.
