Caleres Bolsters Leadership with Fashion Veteran Kristen Sosa to Steer Key New York Brands

By Emily Carter | Business & Economy Reporter

In a strategic move to strengthen its leadership bench, footwear and fashion conglomerate Caleres Inc. has appointed seasoned executive Kristen Sosa to a newly created role: Division President of Brand Portfolio, New York Brands. Sosa will report directly to Caleres President and CEO Jay Schmidt.

The appointment places Sosa at the operational helm of a significant segment of Caleres' portfolio. Her oversight will extend across owned and licensed brands, notably including the recently acquired Stuart Weitzman, alongside Allen Edmonds, Franco Sarto, Vince, Veronica Beard, and the rising label Favorite Daughter.

"Kristen's appointment is a deliberate step in our brand-centric growth strategy," said Schmidt in a statement. "Her three-decade track record in launching, scaling, and revitalizing fashion businesses—particularly in the contemporary and luxury spaces—brings the precise operational discipline and strategic vision we need for this next chapter."

Sosa's career trajectory underscores her merchant leadership credentials. She most recently served as CEO for North America at French contemporary label Zadig & Voltaire, driving expansion across the continent. Prior roles include President of the Americas at Marc Jacobs, where she shaped regional retail and wholesale strategy, and Chief Merchant at luxury e-commerce platform Olivela. Her fashion roots were established at Saks Fifth Avenue, where she ascended through senior leadership roles.

"Caleres has built an impressive foundation in fashion footwear, and these brands are poised for their next evolution," Sosa commented. "I'm energized to collaborate with the teams to leverage our collective expertise and create meaningful momentum."

Context & Analysis: Sosa's hiring follows other key leadership changes at Caleres, including the August appointment of Brian Costello as Division President for the mass-market Famous Footwear chain. It also comes on the heels of Caleres's $108.7 million acquisition of the Stuart Weitzman brand from Tapestry Inc. last summer. The company's latest earnings report indicated ongoing efforts to integrate Stuart Weitzman and optimize its inventory, positioning the brand for long-term profitability under the new structure. Sosa's mandate appears clear: to apply her luxury and contemporary expertise to refine brand strategies and accelerate growth for this crucial cluster of labels.

Reactions & Commentary:

  • Michael Tan, Retail Analyst at Berenson Capital: "This is a savvy hire. Sosa's deep wholesale and retail experience, especially from her Marc Jacobs days, is exactly what a portfolio of this nature needs. She understands how to build brand equity while driving commercial results—a balance critical for these labels."
  • Eleanor Shaw, Former Buye r at Bergdorf Goodman: "I've followed Kristen's career since Saks. She has a merchant's eye and a strategist's mind. Putting her in charge of this group, especially integrating a recently acquired asset like Stuart Weitzman, suggests Caleres is serious about elevating its brand game beyond footwear fundamentals."
  • David Park, Editor at 'The Retail Critique' blog: "Another executive musical chairs. Does shuffling seasoned veterans between the same handful of conglomerates really spark innovation? Caleres bought Stuart Weitzman on the cheap, and now they're bringing in a fixer. This feels more like financial engineering and cost synergy play than a genuine creative revival for these brands."
