Defense Deal Backlash: ChatGPT Sees Uninstall Spike as Users Flock to Rival Claude

In a dramatic shift reflecting user sentiment over corporate ethics, mobile uninstalls of OpenAI's ChatGPT app surged by 295% in the U.S. on Saturday, February 28. The spike followed the public announcement of a new partnership between OpenAI and the U.S. Department of Defense.

Market intelligence firm Sensor Tower provided the data, noting the figure represents a stark departure from the app's average daily uninstall rate of 9% observed over the preceding month. The partnership, which involves the integration of AI tools for administrative and analytical tasks within the defense apparatus, has sparked a visible user exodus.

The reaction created a direct beneficiary: Anthropic's Claude. The competing AI app, whose developers publicly declined a similar defense partnership on ethical grounds, saw U.S. downloads jump 37% on Friday and 51% on Saturday. Anthropic cited an inability to reach terms, specifically over concerns regarding potential surveillance applications and the future use of AI in autonomous weapon systems—a domain the company stated the technology is not yet prepared to handle responsibly.

"The data suggests a segment of consumers is actively voting with their downloads," said tech analyst Marcus Chen. "This isn't just about features; it's a alignment check on corporate values, and Anthropic's clear stance resonated."

The fallout for ChatGPT extended beyond uninstalls. Its download growth in the U.S. turned negative, dropping 13% on Saturday and a further 5% on Sunday—a reversal from a 14% growth rate the day before the deal was made public. Meanwhile, Claude ascended to the top of the U.S. App Store's free apps chart by Saturday, a position it maintained into the following week, marking a leap of over 20 ranks from its position just days prior.

User sentiment was also starkly visible in app store reviews. Sensor Tower reported a 775% surge in 1-star reviews for ChatGPT on Saturday, followed by another 100% increase on Sunday. Concurrently, 5-star reviews fell by half.

Other analytics firms corroborated the trend. Appfigures noted that Claude's U.S. downloads overtook ChatGPT's for the first time on Saturday, estimating the jump at 88%. The app also claimed the number one free iPhone app spot in several countries, including the U.S., Canada, and Germany.

While Similarweb confirmed a massive week-over-week download increase for Claude—roughly twenty times January's volume—it cautioned that factors beyond the political controversy may have contributed to the rise.

User Reactions

David R., Software Engineer, Seattle: "This is a predictable outcome. In the tech age, brand trust is fragile. OpenAI crossed a line for many privacy-conscious users, and Anthropic provided a clear alternative. The market is self-correcting."

Priya Sharma, Ethics in Tech Advocate, Austin: "It's heartening to see consumers hold companies accountable. This data proves there's a real cost to ignoring public concern over militarization and surveillance. AI development must have ethical guardrails, not just commercial or governmental ones."

Mark T., Veteran & Tech Blogger: "This is an overreaction fueled by misinformation. The DoD deal is for back-office efficiency, not building killer robots. People are ditching a superior tool over a symbolic protest, and it reeks of performative activism. Claude's moment in the sun will be short-lived."

Lisa G., College Student, Boston: "I deleted ChatGPT immediately. It felt like a betrayal. You build a relationship with a tool, trust it with your thoughts, and then find out it's getting into bed with an institution with a controversial history. No thanks. My data and my conscience are worth more."
