EU pledges €2 million to Nepal flood relief as death toll surpasses 500

The European Union has committed €2 million ($2.3 million) in humanitarian aid to support survivors of the devastating flash floods in Nepal, where officials confirmed the death toll has exceeded 500.

“Roads washed away. Villages cut off. Families searching for missing loved ones. The flash floods in Nepal have shattered communities already rebuilding from past disasters,” EU Crisis Commissioner Hadja Lahbib said in a statement released on Friday.

The funding is aimed at covering urgent healthcare, food, shelter, and clean water for those displaced, the European Commission said. EU-backed aid organizations are already operating in the affected districts, delivering supplies to areas that remain difficult to reach.

The latest emergency allocation adds to nearly €3 million in EU funding provided earlier this year for disaster preparedness in Nepal, a country that repeatedly faces climate-related shocks during the monsoon season. The broader concern now, humanitarian workers say, is that recovery will require far more sustained support as vulnerable mountain communities face an uncertain path to rebuilding.
