Florida Man Picked a Fight With a Cop in a Hospital ER. It Didn’t End Well for Him.

When Ronald Jeffery Johnson walked into Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale late last month, he likely expected medical attention. Instead, the 51-year-old left in handcuffs — but not before getting the fight he claims to have wanted with a police officer.
According to an arrest report obtained by The Independent, the trouble began on August 29 when Johnson started yelling at medical staff in the hospital's waiting room. A Fort Lauderdale Police officer working an off-duty detail — still in full uniform — responded to the disturbance. The officer wrote that Johnson was causing a scene and frightening other patients. Then, things escalated in a way hospital security rarely sees.
Johnson looked at the officer and reportedly announced, “I want to fight you.” He then charged at the officer and grabbed him, sparking a physical struggle, according to police. The officer attempted to restrain Johnson, but the confrontation dragged on before it was brought under control.
When it was over, neither man walked away untouched. The officer suffered a cut on his left hand that required multiple stitches. Johnson ended up with significant facial injuries and was treated at the hospital before being medically cleared and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
A booking photo taken after the incident tells a visceral story: extensive swelling and bruising around Johnson’s face, with dried blood around his nose and mouth. The image also shows a gloved hand supporting him during the booking process — an unusual detail noted by The Independent. The arrest report itself does not specify exactly how each injury occurred.
But Johnson’s legal troubles didn’t stop at the Florida charges. While running his information, authorities discovered an active warrant out of Georgia. Court records show Johnson had failed to appear in connection with a 2023 arrest in Floyd County. Local outlet WPLG reported that Johnson was accused of threatening someone with a boat paddle at Cedar Creek Park in Cave Spring, allegedly in front of the victim’s 8-year-old child. That incident led to charges of terroristic threats and cruelty to children.
Now, Johnson is facing a steep set of charges in Florida. Broward County court records identify the case as State of Florida v. Ronald Jeffery Johnson, case number 26010473CF10A, filed August 30 as a first-degree felony case. The charges include aggravated battery on an officer, a first-degree felony; resisting an officer with violence, a third-degree felony; assault on an officer, firefighter, or emergency medical technician, a first-degree misdemeanor; and disorderly conduct, also a first-degree misdemeanor.
A magistrate judge found probable cause on August 31. The docket also includes orders for medical and mental-health screening, and permission for a representative to photograph Johnson’s injuries — a procedural step that suggests the injuries sustained during the confrontation may become a point of scrutiny as the case moves forward.
WPLG reported that as of September 2, Johnson remained in the Broward County Main Jail with bond set at $8,500. The case is still active, and no disposition has been listed in court records.
It’s worth remembering that Johnson has been charged, not convicted. The officer’s account of what happened inside the hospital is, at this stage, an official accusation that will now be tested in court. But the image of a man who demanded a fight with a police officer, and got precisely that, has already made for a striking footnote in the long, strange annals of Florida crime.
