HSBC UK and Sage Partner to Launch Integrated Tax Tool as Digital Reporting Deadline Looms
With the UK's Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax mandate set to take effect in April, HSBC UK has joined forces with accounting software giant Sage to launch an integrated digital tool aimed at easing the compliance burden for small businesses and the self-employed.
The new service, called My Business Finances, leverages Sage's embedded technology directly within HSBC UK's business banking platform. It allows users to manage bookkeeping, invoicing, and—crucially—file their tax returns from their banking dashboard, eliminating the need to switch between separate accounting software.
"For time-poor small business owners, tax administration is often a costly distraction," said Tom Wood, Head of SME Business Banking at HSBC UK. "Our goal with this tool is to consolidate these essential financial tasks into a single, trusted environment within their banking account, freeing them up to focus on growth, especially as new reporting requirements approach."
The initial rollout will target sole traders and landlords, who are among the first groups required to comply with the phased MTD for Income Tax rules. The initiative marks a significant step in the banking sector's move towards providing embedded finance solutions that blend everyday banking with operational tools.
Gordon Stuart, Senior Vice-President of Fintech and Embedded Services at Sage, noted, "By integrating our core accounting and tax capabilities into HSBC's platform, we're removing friction. Small businesses can now run their finances where they already bank, making compliance simpler and more accessible."
This collaboration follows Sage's introduction last September of an AI-driven tool for MTD automation, highlighting the industry's push towards digitising tax processes ahead of the government's deadline.
Reactions from the Business Community
Priya Sharma, a freelance graphic designer in London: "As a sole trader, I've been dreading the MTD switch. Having my invoicing and tax filing built right into my bank account is a game-changer—it feels seamless and saves me hours each month."
David Chen, a small business advisor in Manchester: "This is a logical and necessary evolution. Banks are finally acting as true financial hubs. The integration is smart, but its success will depend on how intuitive the tool is for non-accountants."
Michaela Roberts, a café owner and landlord in Bristol: "Another digital 'solution' from big banks and tech firms. It's all very well, but what about support for those not tech-savvy? This feels like pushing the cost and complexity of HMRC's changes onto us, with the banks now profiting from our compliance headache."
Professor Alistair Reed, a fintech researcher at Edinburgh University: "The HSBC-Sage partnership reflects a broader trend of 'banking as a platform'. It strategically positions HSBC to retain SME clients by becoming essential to their operational workflow, not just their cash storage."
