Hundreds flock to Jersey's Battle of the Flowers as 23 floats take over Victoria Avenue

Hundreds of people lined the streets of St Helier on the opening day of the Battle of the Flowers, as Jersey's favorite summer event got under way with music, dancing and displays of intricate floral design.

Victoria Avenue was transformed into a giant floral arena for the annual parade, drawing spectators along the route to watch teams and volunteers show off months of work.

A total of 23 teams took part in the day parade, with floats designed and built by parish teams, community organizations and volunteers. The floats were later moved to Lower Park, where they will stay overnight so people can see them close-up.

Martyn Maguire, chairman of the Battle of the Flowers, said he had not expected to see so many people at the event.

“People are really enjoying it,” he said. “The Battle of the Flowers is steeped in tradition, it’s over 125 years old... the community spirit is just tremendous.”

For Jersey, the festival is far more than a parade. It is one of the island's most popular summer events, bringing visitors into St Helier and giving a platform to local charities, community groups and small businesses that spend months preparing their entries. Many spectators arrived early to secure a view, and the atmosphere along the route stayed festive as the floats headed to Lower Park.

Visitors are being reminded to plan ahead for the rest of the event, with road closures and parking restrictions in place around the parade route.
