Israeli Airstrikes Hit Southern Lebanon Town, Killing at Least 16

BEIRUT — Israeli airstrikes targeted the southern Lebanese town of Nabi Chit overnight, leaving at least 16 people dead and 35 wounded, according to statements from Lebanese health officials on Thursday. The strikes mark one of the deadliest single incidents in the ongoing, low-intensity conflict along the Lebanon-Israel border, which has seen near-daily exchanges of fire since the war in Gaza began last October.

The bombardment, which Lebanese sources described as intense, hit residential areas in the town located in the Bekaa Valley. Emergency services worked through the night to extract casualties from damaged buildings. The Israeli military stated the strikes were targeting "Hezbollah infrastructure" in response to rocket fire into northern Israel earlier in the day. Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group, has not immediately commented on the casualties in Nabi Chit, which is considered a stronghold of its support.

Analysts warn that the increasing casualty figures and geographic spread of strikes risk triggering a more severe escalation, despite efforts by international mediators to keep the conflict contained. The border violence has already displaced tens of thousands of people on both sides.

Karim Al-Fadel, Political Science Professor, Beirut University: "This is a dangerous inflection point. The rules of engagement that have prevented a full-scale war since 2006 are being eroded with each strike of this magnitude. The international community's focus on Gaza has created a perilous vacuum in Lebanon."

Sarah Cohen, Aid Worker with 'MedFront': "Our teams are overwhelmed. We're seeing entire families affected. The narrative of 'precision strikes' collapses when you're on the ground treating children with shrapnel wounds. The human cost is being ignored by geopolitical posturing."

David Stern, Security Analyst, Tel Aviv: "Israel's message is clear: Hezbollah's aggression will be met with disproportionate force. The responsibility for every casualty lies with Hezbollah, which embeds its assets within civilian populations. Israel has the right and duty to defend its northern communities."

Layla Haddad, Displaced Resident from Southern Lebanon (now in Beirut): "Enough! They are killing us in our homes! This isn't 'clashes' or 'exchanges'—it's slaughter. Where is the world? We are not just a 'front line' or a 'proxy conflict'; we are people, and we are being erased."
