Light Aircraft Crash in Essex Field Prompts Investigation by Air Accidents Branch
Investigators are on the ground in Essex after a light aircraft crashed into a field near the village of High Ongar on Tuesday afternoon, prompting a formal inquiry by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB).
The aircraft came down off Mill Lane, a rural stretch east of the M11, around midday. Local residents reported hearing a low-flying engine before a sudden silence, followed by the sound of impact. No injuries have been confirmed, but emergency services were quickly dispatched.
The AAIB described the event as an "accident" and said a team of inspectors was en route to the site to begin gathering evidence. "We have deployed specialists to examine the wreckage and the surrounding area," a spokesman said. The agency will look at factors including weather conditions, mechanical failure, and pilot experience.
Essex Police and the East of England Ambulance Service have been contacted for comment but have not yet released official statements. The field, part of a private farmland, remains cordoned off as investigators work.
Light aircraft accidents, though rare in the UK, have raised concerns in recent years over aging fleets and pilot training standards. According to the Civil Aviation Authority, there were 11 fatal accidents involving light aircraft in the UK in 2023, down from a five-year average of 14.
