Man in His 80s Dies in Wood Green House Fire; Cause Under Investigation

Wood Green, London — A man in his 80s has died after a fire broke out at a two-story row house in Wood Green, north London, emergency officials said.

Emergency crews were called to the home on Granville Road at about 10:15 p.m. BST on Saturday. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) said a woman had left the property before firefighters arrived, but the man died at the scene.

The fire destroyed the first floor — the upper level of the two-story home — and about half of the roof, according to LFB. Crews brought the blaze under control by 11:30 p.m. The Metropolitan Police and LFB are investigating the cause.

A police spokesperson said: “Sadly, a man in his 80s died at the scene.

“His next of kin have been informed and continue to be supported.

“Specialist Met officers are currently supporting the London Fire Brigade to investigate the circumstances around the fire.”

No further details about the man’s identity were immediately released. Wood Green is a busy residential and retail district in north London, and the fire is a reminder of the risks older residents can face in home emergencies, when mobility, hearing, or other health issues may slow evacuation.

The investigation is ongoing, and officials have not said what caused the fire or whether any other properties were affected.
