Mom Sparks Debate After Discovering Data Center Marketing in Son’s School Backpack

A mother living in what she calls the “data center capital of the world” has ignited an online firestorm after sharing a video of a school packet she says her son brought home — one she argues is less about honoring veterans and more about promoting the local data center industry.
In the video, the mom — who has asked not to be named — holds up a Memorial Day-themed packet distributed through her child’s elementary school. The kit includes coloring pages, small flags, a “Flags of Valor” activity booklet, and a one-page flyer highlighting data center jobs and their economic impact in the region.
“This feels like a lovely propaganda piece about data centers and how great they are,” she says in the clip, which has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times. She questions why data center companies were given direct access to students and families through a holiday-themed school activity, calling the connection between Memorial Day and data center promotion “nonsensical.”
“Data centers do not have anything in common with honoring the soldiers that have lost their lives defending and serving this country,” she says. She also criticizes school officials for allowing businesses to use the classroom as a distribution channel, saying companies got “free access to the kids” and “free access to send home anything they want.”
The controversy comes as the AI boom drives explosive growth in data center construction across the U.S., particularly in Northern Virginia, which is often described as the world’s largest data center hub. Many companies in the sector are eager to burnish their reputations through community engagement, sponsoring school events and sending home materials that emphasize job creation and infrastructure investment.
But critics argue that such efforts can cross a line, especially when they lack transparency. “Parents should have the choice to opt in or out of corporate messaging in schools,” said one commenter. Another wrote, “Vote that school board out ASAP.”
Beyond branding concerns, data centers bring real-world impacts to surrounding communities — including surging electricity demand, changes in land use, water consumption for cooling, and pressure on local infrastructure. Some residents say they want open public discussions about those trade-offs, not polished handouts stuffed into backpacks.
For the mother in the video, the issue comes down to one question: “Am I in the wrong here? This is crazy, right? The data center companies should not be sponsoring Memorial Day.”
The reaction from viewers suggests she is far from alone in her concern. The clip has sparked broader conversations about corporate influence in schools, the ethics of marketing to children, and how communities can push for greater accountability from the fast-growing data center industry.
