Former attorney general Pam Bondi was diagnosed with thyroid cancer shortly after President Donald Trump ousted her from the Justice Department, according to a new report. The diagnosis came at a particularly turbulent time for the longtime Trump loyalist, who is now poised to return to the administration in a White House advisory role focused on artificial intelligence.

Bondi underwent treatment and is now recovering, Axios reported late Tuesday, citing a source familiar with the matter. The cancer was discovered weeks after Trump abruptly fired her from the top law enforcement post — a move that stunned even some inside the White House given Bondi’s reputation as one of the president’s fiercest defenders.

The revelation was confirmed by Katie Miller, former White House communications aide and wife of deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, in a post on X.

“Pam has been quietly kicking cancer’s ass the last few weeks,” Miller wrote. “@PamBondi has a heart of gold.”

Bondi had served as one of Trump’s most loyal allies inside the cabinet, often accompanying him to high-profile events. She was dismissed the same day she joined the president at the Supreme Court for oral arguments in a major birthright citizenship case in April. Trump named her former deputy, Todd Blanche, as acting attorney general.

The timing of the diagnosis — coming on the heels of her abrupt firing — has fueled speculation among conservative circles about whether the stress of her dismissal may have contributed to the onset of the illness, though no official link has been drawn.

Now, Trump has tapped Bondi for the Presidential Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, a panel focused on artificial intelligence policy. According to Axios, the council is chaired by former White House AI adviser David Sacks and science adviser Michael Kratsios. The group includes some of the biggest names in Silicon Valley — among them Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and Oracle CEO Larry Ellison — giving Bondi a platform at the intersection of technology and public policy as she continues her recovery.
