Pennsylvania Man Charged After Using Excavator to Demolish His Home With Wife and Children Inside

A Pennsylvania man has been charged with endangering his family after local news outlets reported he used an excavator to partially demolish his home while his wife and two children were inside the residence.

Erik Pierwsza, 48, faces three counts of recklessly endangering another person, as well as one count each of causing a catastrophe and disorderly conduct, according to court documents obtained by USA TODAY. He is being held at Butler County Prison on $10,000 bond.

The incident unfolded in Buffalo Township, a small community about 30 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. According to a criminal complaint cited by WTAE and WPXI, Pierwsza allegedly got into an argument with his wife and threatened to tear down the house. He then climbed into an excavator parked on the property and began tearing into the structure, authorities said.

Remarkably, no one was injured. The wife and children managed to stay safe inside the home as parts of the building were destroyed, per local reports. The Buffalo Township Police Department has not yet responded to USA TODAY’s request for additional details.

Court records do not list an attorney for Pierwsza, and notes indicate he is not currently represented by a public defender. The case has drawn attention from neighbors and local officials, who described the incident as a disturbing escalation of a domestic dispute that could have turned deadly.

“This is an extreme case of what happens when a heated argument spirals out of control,” said Dr. Linda Harper, a family crisis expert at the University of Pittsburgh. “The fact that the family was inside and unharmed is fortunate, but the psychological impact will likely be significant.”

Local news footage showed the excavator’s claw protruding through the roof and walls of the home, leaving large sections of the structure in ruins. Real estate experts estimate the damage could exceed $100,000, though an official assessment has not yet been released.

Pierwsza’s bond is set at $10,000, though it remains unclear if he has posted it. The Butler County District Attorney’s Office is expected to present the case to a grand jury later this month.
