Pilot Hospitalized After Incident at Bedfordshire Air Show, Reported Conscious and Alert

A pilot was taken to the hospital Saturday after an incident at the Wings and Wheels Air Show hosted by Shuttleworth in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, according to event organizers.

In a statement, Shuttleworth — which operates a historic aircraft collection and working airfield — said the incident occurred on the south end of the field during the afternoon flying display. Emergency crews responded quickly, and the pilot was extracted from the scene, giving a thumbs-up before being transported for medical evaluation.

“The pilot in question has now been extracted from the scene, given a thumbs up, and been taken to hospital,” the statement reads. While officials did not disclose the nature of the incident or the pilot’s condition, the gesture was widely interpreted as a positive sign by witnesses and first responders.

Shuttleworth confirmed that the attraction, which includes both a museum and active airfield, would remain closed on Sunday as a result of the incident. The air show, which had been scheduled to run from 09:00 BST to 21:00 with two flying displays, was cut short.

The incident marks a rare disruption for Shuttleworth, which has been producing air shows for more than 60 years and is known for its vintage aircraft and strict safety protocols. Aviation safety experts note that while air show accidents are infrequent, they often prompt thorough investigations by the UK’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) and can lead to temporary operational changes.

Local authorities have not yet released further details, and the pilot’s identity and current condition remain unknown. The air show’s cancellation on Sunday disappointed some visitors but drew widespread support for prioritizing the pilot’s well-being.
