Police Officer Seriously Injured After Being Struck by Stolen Patrol Car in Downpatrick

An officer with the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) remains in hospital with serious injuries after being struck by a stolen police car early Sunday morning in Downpatrick, County Down. The incident, which authorities have described as a deliberate and terrifying attack, has prompted an attempted murder investigation.

The officer discharged his firearm once as the vehicle lunged toward him on Colmcille Road, according to police. He was struck nonetheless and required urgent medical attention from colleagues and bystanders before being taken to hospital by ambulance. A 27-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

The chain of events began around 04:45 BST when a vehicle failed to stop for officers on Fountain Street. After that patrol returned to the station, other PSNI units located the same vehicle in the Ballymote Walk area. A man fled on foot, and officers pursued him toward Colmcille Road.

“As officers returned to their police car, someone was in the driver’s seat — driving erratically and directly towards an officer,” said Assistant Chief Constable Melanie Jones. The officer fired a single round, but was unable to avoid being hit. The suspect then abandoned the stolen patrol car and fled the scene.

ACC Jones confirmed the officer’s injuries are “serious, but thankfully not life-threatening at this time.” She added that colleagues and local community members provided critical first aid before paramedics arrived. The officer’s weapon, ammunition, and the stolen vehicle have all been seized for forensic examination.

“This would have been a terrifying experience for the officer and also his colleagues — with the clear potential to cause life-changing or even fatal injuries,” Jones said. “Officers put themselves on the front line to help keep people safe — they do not deserve to be assaulted for simply doing their job, and today’s incident is a stark reminder of the dangers they face.”

As is standard procedure when a police firearm is discharged, the Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland has been notified and has begun an independent investigation. Its Director of Investigations, Nikki Davis, confirmed that investigators have attended the scene and are gathering video evidence and other materials to assess the circumstances.

The attack has reignited concerns about the safety of frontline officers in Northern Ireland, where police routinely face threats from dissident republicans and other violent groups. While the motive in this case remains under investigation, the PSNI has stressed that such incidents underscore the daily risks officers endure.

Detectives from the PSNI’s Serious Crime Branch are leading the probe and have appealed for anyone with information, CCTV, or dash-cam footage to come forward. The arrested man remains in custody.
