BUCHAREST — In a move that solidifies its role as a key NATO ally in Eastern Europe, Romania has authorized the United States to significantly expand its military use of Romanian airbases. The decision, ratified by Romania's Supreme Council of National Defense (CSAT) on Wednesday, facilitates enhanced logistical and operational support for U.S.-led campaigns in the Middle East.
The approval allows for increased flight rotations, logistical staging, and potential deployment of additional assets at bases such as Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base near the Black Sea coast—a critical hub for operations in the region. While official statements framed the move as part of ongoing allied cooperation, analysts note it reflects deepening strategic ties amid persistent instability in the Middle East and heightened security concerns across Europe's eastern flank.
