Search Ends in Tragedy for Kauaʻi Teen Swept Out to Sea While Fishing
KILAUEA, Hawaii — A multi-agency search for a missing teen fisherman has concluded with the discovery of human remains, the Kauaʻi Police Department confirmed Saturday. The remains are believed to be those of 19-year-old Matthew Packard-Asai of Kapaʻa, who was swept off coastal rocks into the ocean on Wednesday afternoon.
The search, which involved air, land, and sea assets from the Coast Guard, Kauaʻi Fire Department, and several volunteer organizations, was called off following the recovery near Kahili Beach. Positive identification is pending DNA analysis, authorities said.
"Our thoughts are with Matthew and his loved ones during this incredibly difficult time," stated Kauaʻi Fire Department Chief Michael Gibson. "We extend our heartfelt support to Matthew’s family as they navigate the days ahead."
The incident underscores the persistent dangers of shoreline fishing in Hawaii, where sudden high surf and powerful rip currents can turn picturesque coastlines deadly in moments. According to preliminary reports, Packard-Asai was fishing with friends when a large wave washed him into the water. Another fisherman was rescued and treated for minor injuries.
Kyle Doepke, whom Packard-Asai considered a father figure, described the teen as a "pure, truly hearted kid" who served as a role model for other children. He recounted to local media the harrowing moment when friends witnessed Packard-Asai, still wearing his shoes and backpack, struggling against the current. "They had to make the worst decision... they got out of the water," Doepke said, noting they shouted for him to swim away from the hazardous rocks.
Community response was swift, with multiple agencies and volunteers aiding in the intensive search across the rugged north shore coastline. The Kauaʻi Police Department has asked for privacy for the family as the investigation continues.
Community Voices
"This is a devastating loss for our tight-knit community. Matthew was a bright light. We've all fished those rocks for generations, but this is a brutal reminder that the ocean demands respect every single time." — David N. (Kīlauea resident and longtime fisherman)
"My heart breaks for his family. The first responders did everything humanly possible. It's just a tragic accident that highlights why we need more prominent warning signs and safety education at these popular fishing spots." — Leilani K. (schoolteacher and family friend)
"How many more lives will it take? These 'dangerous shore' warnings are clearly not enough. The county needs to invest in real barriers or patrols at these high-risk locations, not just press releases after another kid dies." — Marcus T. (local surf instructor, visibly emotional)
"As a former lifeguard on this very beach, I've seen close calls turn fatal too often. The conditions can change in a heartbeat. This tragedy should be a wake-up call for everyone to check surf forecasts, never fish alone, and wear a life jacket—even if you're a strong swimmer." — Sarah J. (retired emergency responder)
