Seattle Residents Erect Barricades to Halt Gun Violence as Socialist Mayor Faces Online Fury

Just months after Seattle’s democratic socialist Mayor Katie Wilson took office, desperate residents in the city’s crime-plagued Aurora Avenue corridor have taken matters into their own hands — erecting makeshift barricades of metal planters, dirt, gravel, logs and concrete chunks to block off streets from what police say are gang-related shootings, prostitution and illegal trafficking.
The weekend before Memorial Day, neighbors walled off at least three access points to their community following weeks of gunfire and high-speed chases. While the improvised barriers could technically violate city codes, local resident Peter Orr told KTVB 7: “It’s either this, or bullets in my neighbor’s houses.”
The scene quickly became a flashpoint online, with conservative commentators and critics of the mayor seizing on the irony of a socialist-led city where residents feel forced to build their own security walls. “The irony is undeniable,” wrote commentator Paul Szypula on X, a sentiment echoed by others who pointed to Wilson’s past support for defunding the police. Libs of TikTok posted: “Seattle residents are now building WALLS on their blocks to keep out criminals.”
Constitutional analyst Jonathan Turley added: “Nothing says socialism more than citizen barricades.” He also drew a parallel to Les Misérables, saying “after electing a mayor who once called for the defunding of police, Seattle neighborhoods are reverting to self-help measures.”
The criticism stems in part from Wilson’s own words. In a 2020 opinion piece, she argued that “there’s never been a better time to try” defunding the police, writing that “there’s a strong argument for simply disbanding police departments and starting over.” She specifically proposed cutting the Seattle Police Department budget by half, saying many police functions could be handled by unarmed personnel.
As mayor, however, Wilson has not pursued a 50% cut. Instead, she has responded to the recent violence by launching a “multi-pronged gun violence strategy,” convening a panel of experts to address retaliatory shootings, youth violence and coordination between police, schools and community groups. She has also paused expansion of CCTV and license plate reader programs pending a privacy audit, while maintaining existing camera systems in high-crime areas including the Aurora corridor.
The barricade incident highlights a broader tension in Seattle — a city that leans overwhelmingly Democratic but is grappling with a surge in violent crime. While Wilson’s office did not respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital, the episode has fueled ongoing national debate over progressive criminal justice reforms and their real-world consequences. As Eric Daugherty, a commentator, put it: “Furious blue city residents in Seattle are now building THEIR OWN BARRICADES … This is MADNESS. The socialist mayor is IGNORING IT. BLUE CITIES ARE COOKED!”
