Six dead in Muscatine shooting spree; police say domestic dispute sparked rampage

A gunman killed six people in a shooting spree that unfolded across multiple locations in the small Mississippi River city of Muscatine, Iowa, before taking his own life, authorities said Saturday. Police identified the suspect as Ryan Willis McFarland, 52, and said all six victims were believed to be family members, with the rampage stemming from a domestic-related dispute.
The Muscatine Police Department said officers responding to a report of gunfire at a riverfront residence around 12:12 p.m. local time discovered four victims dead at the scene. A subsequent investigation led officers to two additional male victims — one inside another home about two miles away and another at a nearby business. McFarland was later found on the Riverfront Trail near the pedestrian bridge, dead from what police described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
“Today, I simply do not have the words — this act of evil and what it has done to our community,” Muscatine Police Chief Anthony Kies said at a brief news conference, adding that there was no ongoing threat to residents. Kies noted that McFarland had a criminal record but declined to elaborate as the investigation continued.
The string of killings rattled Muscatine, a tight-knit city of about 23,000 along the Mississippi River, roughly 67 miles southeast of Cedar Rapids. Multiple law enforcement agencies — including the Iowa State Patrol and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation — are assisting in processing crime scenes and conducting witness interviews. The Muscatine Police Department's Major Crimes Unit is asking anyone with information to come forward.
The incident highlights how domestic violence can escalate into mass violence. While mass shootings tied to family disputes are less common than those driven by other motives, they account for a significant share of gun deaths in the United States, often leaving entire communities grappling with grief and questions about early intervention. Residents described the scene as surreal, with police cordoning off several blocks near the riverfront and a heavy emergency presence that lasted into the evening.
In a press release, the Muscatine Police Department emphasized that the investigation remains active and that victim identifications are pending family notification. Authorities have not released the names of the deceased.
