Social Security Payment Schedule for July Adjusted Due to Independence Day Holiday

The Social Security Administration is rolling out its first batch of July benefit payments this week, with a few scheduling tweaks tied to the Independence Day holiday.
Because July 4 lands on a Saturday this year, the federal government will observe the holiday on Friday, July 3. That closure forces the SSA to shift some payment dates to ensure beneficiaries aren't left waiting over the long weekend.
For most recipients, the adjustments are minor, but knowing the exact date your payment arrives can help with budgeting — especially if a bank holiday or processing delay is in play.
Here's the breakdown of when money will hit accounts in July:
- SSI recipients will receive their July Supplemental Security Income payment on Wednesday, July 1, as usual.
- People who started receiving Social Security before May 1997 — including those living abroad, enrolled in Medicare Savings Programs, or receiving both SSI and Social Security — will be paid on Thursday, July 2 instead of the originally scheduled Friday, July 3.
- For those receiving both SSI and Social Security: the SSI portion arrives July 1, and the Social Security portion arrives July 2 (adjusted from July 3).
- Retirees, SSDI recipients, survivors and others with birthdays between the 1st and 10th of the month will see their July payment on Wednesday, July 8.
- Those with birthdays between the 11th and 20th will be paid on Wednesday, July 15.
- Those with birthdays between the 21st and the end of the month will be paid on Wednesday, July 22.
This staggered schedule — based on birth date — is standard for Social Security retirement, disability and survivors benefits. July's only deviation is the early payment for the pre-1997 group, which is a predictable adjustment that happens whenever a federal holiday lands on a regular payday.
Beneficiaries should note that bank processing can occasionally cause a one- or two-day delay. The SSA recommends waiting at least three business days after the expected payment date before reporting a missing deposit. If your payment hasn't arrived after that window, start by checking your bank account and your My Social Security portal. If nothing shows up, call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 and follow the prompts for a missing payment.
Before calling, have your Social Security number, bank account details, the due date of the payment and any recent changes in address, bank or representative payee status ready. The agency also advises reviewing your benefit amount on My Social Security to spot any discrepancies. Your payment is calculated from your lifetime earnings record, so missing or incorrect earnings could reduce what you receive. Also compare the deposit to your Social Security award letter — noting that Medicare premiums, taxes or overpayment recoveries may lower the final amount.
If something seems off, request a benefit review or recalculation through the SSA. For a complete look at 2026 payment dates, visit the Social Security Administration's online calendar.
