Sweden school sword attack victim identified as 17-year-old girl as suspect held on murder charges

Police in Sweden have confirmed that the teenager killed in a sword attack at a high school in the central part of the country was a 17-year-old girl.

The assault unfolded Friday afternoon at Brinell School in Fagersta, a town roughly 170 kilometers northwest of Stockholm. Two boys, aged 12 and 17, were seriously injured, authorities said, while a third person suffered minor wounds.

An 18-year-old man, who has not been publicly named, was arrested at the scene. Police are treating the case as murder and attempted murder, according to a statement released Saturday.

The attack has shaken a tight-knit community and drawn swift responses from Sweden's political leadership. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and opposition leader Magdalena Andersson visited the school Saturday morning, where mourners had placed flowers in memory of the victim.

It was only days into the new school year, and students had returned to class after the summer break when the violence erupted. Police confirmed that officers fired shots in response to the incident, though they have not said whether the suspect was struck before being detained.

Sveriges Television, the national public broadcaster, reported that the suspect was wearing a helmet at the time of the attack. Local media also identified him as a former student of the school.

A state of emergency was declared for the region Friday evening but had been lifted by Saturday. Investigators have carried out two searches linked to the suspect, police said.

In a post on X, Kristersson called the attack a “serious incident,” adding that “we do not know what lies behind the act, but we know that police are working very intensively.” King Carl XVI Gustaf said he received the news “with dismay and sadness.”

As the investigation continues, authorities are focused on piecing together a motive. School attacks remain rare in Sweden, making Friday's violence especially jarring for a country unaccustomed to such tragedies on campus grounds.
