Teen Driver Killed in Malibu Canyon Crash as Tesla Plunges Off Mountain Road
MALIBU, Calif. — A teenage driver was killed early Wednesday when their car hurtled off a winding section of Malibu Canyon Road, crashing into a mountainside ravine in a single-vehicle accident that has shut down traffic and prompted an investigation.
The fatal crash occurred around 7:40 a.m. on February 4 along the scenic but treacherous route east of Malibu. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a 2018 Tesla Model S was traveling northbound at an unknown speed when it suddenly made a sharp turn, left the roadway, and became airborne before colliding head-on with a dirt embankment.
First responders from the Los Angeles County Fire Department and Sheriff's Office pronounced the driver, identified only as a juvenile, dead at the scene shortly before 8 a.m. The driver sustained major injuries. The victim's identity has not been released pending notification of family.
"Malibu Canyon Road is reduced to one lane at Potter Road with alternating traffic control due to a vehicle over the side," the City of Malibu's Office of Public Safety warned via social media, urging motorists to seek alternate routes during the morning commute.
KTLA footage from the scene showed emergency crews surrounding a visibly damaged red vehicle down the steep incline. The CHP's West Valley Area office is leading the investigation into what caused the crash. It remains unclear whether speed, mechanical failure, driver inexperience, or road conditions played a role.
Malibu Canyon Road, a popular shortcut between the San Fernando Valley and Pacific Coast Highway, is known for its sharp curves and steep drop-offs. While offering stunning vistas, the road has been the site of numerous serious accidents over the years, raising ongoing concerns about safety measures on such mountain passes.

"This is an absolute tragedy. That road is a nightmare, especially in the early morning with sun glare," said David Chen, a local resident and frequent commuter. "My heart breaks for that young person's family. We need better signage or maybe even guardrails in the worst spots."
"Another preventable death on a road that's basically a racetrack for some drivers," commented Maya Rodriguez, a safety advocate with the 'Canyon Safe' coalition.
