Tenable Stock Jumps After S&P SmallCap 600 Inclusion

Tenable Holdings (TENB) shares rallied in after-hours trading on Wednesday after S&P Dow Jones Indices said the cybersecurity firm will be added to the S&P SmallCap 600 index.
The stock was up about 8% in extended trading at last check, after initially jumping as much as 12%. It closed the regular session up 3%.
Tenable will replace Leggett & Platt in the small-cap index before the open on Monday, August 31, S&P said. The move comes after Somnigroup International completed its all-stock acquisition of Leggett, a transaction the company confirmed Wednesday. Somnigroup is already in the S&P MidCap 400.
Index inclusion tends to trigger a short-term rally because exchange-traded funds and other passive vehicles that track the S&P SmallCap 600 typically buy the newly added stock ahead of the effective date. For Tenable, that could add some support into next week.
The addition comes just over a month after Tenable reported second-quarter results. Revenue rose 8.6% to $268.5 million for the three months ended June 30, beating analyst estimates. Management also lifted its 2026 sales outlook to between $1.075 billion and $1.081 billion. Tenable One, its exposure management platform, accounted for half of new business during the quarter.
Earlier this month, Tenable also faced a short-seller report, though the fallout was limited. The Bear Cave, a research service published under Hunterbrook Media and working with Citrini Research, released a report on August 7 titled "Problems at Tenable." The authors argued that standalone vulnerability tools are losing ground to platforms from CrowdStrike, SentinelOne and Microsoft, as well as cheaper AI-driven and open-source scanners. They also said they had built a test tool, "Untenable," that uncovered security gaps Tenable missed. Hunterbrook Capital disclosed a short position in TENB.
On Stocktwits, retail sentiment toward Tenable improved from "extremely bearish" to "bearish" over the past 24 hours, with message volume still low.
Analysts remain split. According to Koyfin, 9 of 23 analysts covering TENB rate it Buy or higher, 13 rate it Hold and one rates it Strong Sell. The stock has a 12-month average price target of $35.35, implying about 5% upside from the last regular-session close.
Tenable shares have gained 43% year-to-date.
