Unidentified Projectile Strike Kills One on Iranian Container Ship in Strait of Hormuz

An attack on an Iranian container ship in the Strait of Hormuz killed one crew member and injured four others, Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency reported Sunday, saying the vessel was struck by an “unidentified projectile.”
The attack occurred Sunday morning near Hengam Island on the Iranian side of the strait, according to the report. The strategic waterway separates Iran from the Arabian Peninsula and serves as a chokepoint for a large share of global energy shipments.
Overnight, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, or UKMTO, had reported an attack on a vessel in the strait. It was not immediately clear whether the two reports referred to the same incident.
The reported strike comes as tensions between Washington and Tehran have escalated over control of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has sought to disrupt shipping through threats and attacks on vessels, while the U.S. military has begun targeting Iranian commercial ships under President Donald Trump’s “tanker-for-tanker” policy, described as retaliation for Iranian missile attacks on commercial vessels.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical export route for oil, liquefied natural gas and fertilizer from Gulf countries. Any renewed disruption there can quickly raise shipping and insurance costs, unsettle energy markets and increase pressure on global fuel prices.
Inside the United States, shipping disruptions and rising prices have created significant political pressure for Trump ahead of November’s midterm elections, adding a domestic dimension to the maritime confrontation.
