U.S. Army Reserve Major Identified as Fifth Casualty in Iran-Linked Drone Strike in Kuwait

WASHINGTON — The Department of Defense confirmed on Wednesday the identity of a fifth U.S. Army Reserve soldier killed in action during Operation Epic Fury, the ongoing military engagement triggered by recent hostilities with Iran. The serviceman was identified as Major Jeffrey R. O’Brien, 38, assigned to the 103rd Sustainment Command.

According to Pentagon officials, Maj. O’Brien died in Kuwait as a result of an unmanned aircraft system (UAS) attack launched by Iranian forces. His death marks another somber milestone in a conflict that began with a series of U.S. and Israeli strikes over the weekend, targeting Iranian nuclear and military infrastructure. While no formal declaration of war has been issued, the exchange of attacks has resulted in significant casualties, including the reported death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and hundreds of civilians.

"Major O’Brien represented the very best of our nation's citizen-soldiers," a Pentagon spokesperson stated. "His service and sacrifice will not be forgotten."

O’Brien’s name follows the previously announced deaths of four other soldiers: Sgt. 1st Class Noah L. Tietjens, Sgt. 1st Class Nicole M. Amor, Sgt. Declan J. Coady, and Capt. Cody A. Khork. Additionally, Chief Warrant Officer Robert M. Marzan, also of the 103rd, is believed to have perished in the same attack; formal identification is pending completion by the medical examiner.

The operation has ignited intense political debate at home. A Senate vote on a war powers resolution failed 47-53 on Tuesday, highlighting deep divisions over the scope and authorization of military action. Former President Donald Trump has defended the initial strikes as a necessary measure to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, a stance echoed by some congressional allies.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, mourning the loss of two soldiers from her state, issued a heartfelt statement: "Our hearts are broken by the deaths of Major Jeffrey O’Brien and Sergeant Declan Coady... We ask all Iowans to stand united in support of our fallen soldiers and those who loved them."

The attack underscores the persistent threat posed by Iranian drone capabilities to the approximately 40,000-50,000 U.S. troops stationed across the Middle East. Analysts warn that the conflict risks a dangerous regional escalation, with potential repercussions for global energy markets and international security frameworks.

Reaction and Analysis

Marcus Thorne, Security Analyst at the Global Risk Institute: "This casualty report is a grim reminder that asymmetric warfare, particularly drone technology, has leveled the battlefield. The strategic calculus for U.S. force protection in the region must be urgently reevaluated. The political failure of the war powers resolution also creates a perilous ambiguity for our troops on the ground."

Sarah Chen, Veteran and Advocate with 'Families for Secure Deployment': "Every name released is a family shattered. Maj. O’Brien and his comrades were reservists—teachers, engineers, neighbors—who answered the call. We must have a clear, achievable mission defined by Congress before we ask for another ounce of sacrifice. This feels like a slide into a conflict without end or clear purpose."

David P. Miller, Former CIA Operations Officer: "The kinetic option was chosen, and we are now witnessing the inevitable and tragic cost. Arming Kurdish or other opposition forces might seem like a logical pressure point against the Tehran regime, but history is littered with such strategies backfiring spectacularly. We are adding fuel to a fire we may not control."

Rebecca Vance, Political Commentator: "This is an absolute dereliction of duty by the administration! These soldiers are dying because of a reckless, poorly conceived operation with no exit strategy. The Senate had a chance to assert constitutional authority and failed. We are sacrificing American lives in what is becoming a partisan-driven war."
