US Training Ship Skips Belfast Port Call After Racist Violence Erupts in Northern Ireland
A United States maritime training vessel has abruptly canceled a long-planned visit to Belfast, citing safety concerns after a wave of racist violence swept parts of Northern Ireland last week.
The Empire State VII, a training ship operated by the State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College, had been expected to dock at Belfast Harbour for a four-day stopover earlier this week, bringing roughly 500 maritime cadets to the city.
Instead, the vessel will now call at the port of Southampton in southern England, the college confirmed.
The decision was made as the violence peaked, with images of burning cars and homes dominating local news. The unrest, which targeted minority communities, has drawn widespread condemnation from political leaders and community groups.
“While changes to a voyage of this magnitude are never made lightly, this decision reflects our commitment to prudent risk management and ensuring a safe and productive training experience for everyone aboard,” the college said in a statement posted on Instagram. “Maritime operations require constant assessment of changing conditions around the world, and the ability to adapt is a hallmark of both good seamanship and effective leadership.”
The Empire State VII is currently on its Summer Sea Term training program, which had already included a stop in Málaga, Spain. The cancellation comes as Stormont Health Minister Mike Nesbitt described the violence as “a stain on Northern Ireland’s reputation, locally, nationally and internationally.”
The unrest, which began after an anti-immigration protest turned violent, has raised concerns about growing far-right activity in the region and its potential impact on tourism and international investment. Local residents reported being forced to flee their homes, and at least one nurse said she was considering leaving Northern Ireland to save her life.
Belfast Harbour officials expressed disappointment but said they understood the decision. The cancellation marks a significant blow to the city’s efforts to position itself as a safe and welcoming destination for international maritime events.
