Video captures emotional moment as divers locate 5 missing villagers in flooded Lao cave

(NewsNation) — A dramatic video has surfaced showing the moment rescue divers emerged from a flooded cave in central Laos after locating five of seven missing villagers, sparking emotional embraces and cheers among the team on the ground.
The operation unfolded in Xaisomboun province, where the group had been trapped since May 19. As of Wednesday — eight days into the search — two individuals remain unaccounted for, and efforts to find them continue, according to Bounkham Luanglath of the Lao organization Rescue Volunteer for People.
“I’m still shaking. Our team made it happen,” Luanglath said, visibly moved by the breakthrough.
The villagers were reportedly searching for gold when heavy rains flooded the cave, cutting off their exit, the Laotian Times reported. The incident draws parallels to the 2018 Thai cave rescue, which gripped global attention when a youth soccer team was trapped for weeks. Expert divers who participated in that mission joined the current search on Monday, underscoring the complexity and danger of underground flood rescues in Southeast Asia’s karst terrain.
The region’s monsoon season often triggers flash floods, making cave exploration particularly hazardous. The successful location of the five missing marks a rare moment of relief in a country where rural communities frequently face such perils with limited rescue resources. Families of the two still missing remain hopeful as crews push deeper into the flooded passages.
