Video of Iran’s Supreme Leader Looking Healthy Raises New Questions About Its Timing
Iran on Sunday released a rare video purportedly showing Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei looking healthy after months out of public view, a move that immediately raised questions about when the footage was actually recorded.
The video, distributed by Iran’s semi-official Mehr News Agency, shows Khamenei seated with a group of men and appears to capture him in conversation. The agency did not disclose where or when the footage was filmed, and the timing could not be independently verified.
The 56-year-old leader has not been seen in public for nearly six months. According to The New York Post, he suffered serious facial and leg injuries during the Feb. 28 strike on his father’s compound, an attack that killed then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In the new video, Mojtaba Khamenei shows no visible signs of those injuries, raising doubts about whether the footage predates the attack.
Earlier this year, sources close to Khamenei told Reuters that his face was disfigured in the strike and that he had stayed out of view. More recent reports have pointed to complications from those injuries, though Iranian officials have consistently denied that the supreme leader’s health is failing. They have also pushed back on suggestions that Khamenei is a figurehead for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Sunday’s video appears to be part of a broader effort by Iranian state media to project stability. Qasem Qoraishi, a deputy in Iran’s Basij Organization, said additional footage would be released showing Khamenei in public and meeting with military officials. The videos, he said, would “once again bring disgrace upon the enemies and detractors of the Iranian people.”
Iranian officials are also expected to release video from a purported July meeting between Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian, according to the Post. That meeting has drawn scrutiny after Pezeshkian described being driven in a vehicle with blacked-out windows to a secret Tehran location, adding that he could not clearly see the person he met. The ambiguity has fueled speculation about the supreme leader’s condition.
The new video is likely to intensify debates inside and outside Iran about the leadership transition and the reliability of state media. The post-strike period has been marked by conflicting accounts over Khamenei’s health and authority, with some analysts suggesting that the IRGC has consolidated power behind the scenes. The public release of carefully produced imagery suggests a leadership seeking to counter those narratives.
It also underscores the extent to which Iran’s leadership is using controlled imagery to shape perception. Earlier, after rumors circulated that Khamenei had been killed, Iranian outlets released AI-generated images of the supreme leader. The recurrence of carefully managed media content has left observers questioning what remains visible and what is being withheld.
