Virginia Manhunt Intensifies for Suspect in Fatal Shooting of Sheriff's Deputy During Welfare Check

A large-scale manhunt is underway in Carroll County, Virginia, after a sheriff's deputy was fatally shot while responding to a welfare check request, according to law enforcement officials.
The Carroll County Sheriff's Office said Deputy Logan Utt, 27, was killed when a man opened fire on him and another deputy as they arrived at a residence late Sunday night. The deputies returned fire and both were struck. Utt died at the scene. The second deputy was hit in his ballistic vest, and after receiving medical evaluation, he is reported to be in stable condition.
“Deputy Utt was a devoted husband, loving father, cherished family member, friend, and respected member of our law enforcement family. His service, courage, and dedication will not be forgotten,” the sheriff's office said in a statement, calling the loss a devastating blow to the community.
Utt, who served in the military before joining the sheriff's office in 2023, leaves behind a wife and young child. His death marks the first line-of-duty fatality for the Carroll County Sheriff's Office in more than two decades.
Authorities have identified the suspect but have not released his name publicly, pending further investigation. They describe him as armed and extremely dangerous, and have urged residents to stay inside and report any suspicious activity.
Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger said her office is closely monitoring the situation. “I encourage anyone with information on the suspect's whereabouts to contact Virginia State Police. My thoughts are with the deputy's family and the Carroll County Sheriff's Office as we work through this awful situation,” Spanberger wrote on social media.
The Virginia State Police, along with the FBI and U.S. Marshals, have joined the search, deploying K-9 units, helicopters, and tactical teams. Local schools were placed on lockdown as a precaution Monday morning, and nearby roads have been closed.
Community members have begun leaving flowers and notes at the sheriff’s office in memory of Utt. A GoFundMe campaign organized by fellow deputies has raised over $50,000 in less than 12 hours to support his family.
The incident has reignited calls for greater protections for law enforcement officers responding to welfare checks, which are among the most unpredictable calls for service. “Every day, deputies answer these calls hoping to help, but they know the risks can turn deadly in seconds,” said a former sheriff’s office official who spoke on condition of anonymity.
As the manhunt stretches into its second day, authorities are asking the public for any information that could lead to the suspect's capture.
