Whistleblower Alleges Google AI Support Aided Israeli Military Contractor, Violating Ethics Pledge
A bombshell whistleblower complaint filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) alleges that Google provided technical support for an artificial intelligence project that aided the Israeli military, directly contradicting the company's publicly stated ethical principles on AI and weapons.
The complaint, detailed in a Washington Post report on Sunday, was submitted by a former Google employee. It centers on a 2024 customer support request allegedly sent from an email address linked to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to Google's cloud-computing division. The request sought help troubleshooting Google's Gemini AI system, which was being used to analyze aerial footage and was reportedly failing to consistently identify objects like drones and soldiers.
According to the complaint, the customer was an employee of CloudEx, an Israeli technology firm identified as an IDF contractor. Google's customer support staff reportedly engaged in multiple exchanges, offered suggestions, and conducted internal tests related to the bug, which was later resolved. The whistleblower asserts the aerial footage was related to Israeli operations in Gaza, though no specific evidence was provided for that claim within the filing.
At the heart of the allegation is a violation of Google's "AI Principles," which at the time explicitly stated the company would not pursue AI applications in weapons or surveillance that violate "internationally accepted norms." The former employee claims that while other projects underwent rigorous internal ethics reviews, support for this request did not, creating a "double standard."
"The process is robust, and we are regularly reminded of the importance of the AI Principles," the whistleblower stated anonymously, fearing retaliation. "But when it came to Israel and Gaza, the opposite was true."
Google has forcefully pushed back against the allegations. A company spokesperson disputed the characterization of a double standard, arguing the support did not violate ethics policies because the scale of the customer's AI usage was too minor. "The ticket originated from an account with less than a couple hundred dollars of monthly spend on AI products, which makes any meaningful usage of AI impossible," the spokesperson told The Post. They characterized the interaction as providing "standard, help desk information" of the kind offered to any customer.
The controversy emerges against a backdrop of increasing scrutiny over tech giants' military contracts and evolving AI ethics policies. Notably, in February 2025, Google revised the section of its AI principles that barred work on weapons and surveillance, stating a need to help democratic governments keep pace with global AI adoption.
